One of the most popular trends in home security today is the installation of wireless alarm systems. Before you jump on the bandwagon, though, you should know a little more about how these systems work, as well as the benefits (and drawbacks) to this technology. To start off, let's examine the two forms of wireless alarm system:

There are two dominant types of wireless home security systems on the market today: self installed systems and professionally installed systems (ADT and others). Both offer wireless benefits, but they are very different, as well. Self installed systems are usually very simple to install, though they are limited in their application as well as their usefulness to consumers. This is because they are not monitored and have no ability to alert police, fire or emergency authorities. A professionally installed system comes with dedicated monitoring capabilities (read that as 24-7) as well as the means to alert the right authorities (through the monitoring company).

Now that we know that a professionally installed system is the best option for comprehensive protection, let's move on to other aspects. The installation itself is not completely wireless. While all the sensors are wireless, the control unit(s) are not. These need to be wired into the home for several reasons, including being wired into your phone line. This is how the system communicates with the monitoring station. Some new systems offer wireless communication through your ISP, as well. Regardless, the installation of the control units is minimally invasive for your home.

A wireless home alarm communicates or sends signals to the control unit through RF signals (radio frequency). Some systems have been designed to use infrared beams, as well. When the system is armed, the detectors monitor the surrounding area for motion (actually registers as a temperature difference) and send the signal to the control unit. The control unit then sends a signal to the monitoring company and sets off the alarm. When the monitoring company receives the signal from the alarm system, they will contact the homeowner to ascertain the situation.

In addition, there are quite a few accessories or add-ons that can be included with this type of home alarm system. If there are elderly family members in the home, young children or anyone with health problems, you can include panic buttons that will alert the monitoring company and medical response authorities. Carbon monoxide detectors are another popular option, as are water monitoring sensors for areas in a home that are susceptible to flooding. There are numerous other aspects that can be added, as well, such as wireless video cameras and wireless arm/disarm devices that can be carried on your key ring for better security options.

Bruce Kelly tip - The installation of a wireless home alarm system is an excellent choice for older homes or pre-existing homes where drilling could be costly or impossible. Check with your security provider before installation to make sure they carry wireless components

Every head of household wants their family to be safe and the same goes with property managers who keep safety at top of mind to keep tenants safe and secure. New homeowners and landlords may not have an emergency preparedness plan but soon find out it is necessary. Even if you have never had an emergency where you live or work; checking the safety of your residence once a year is vital to minimize risk.

Families are usually more concerned with testing smoke alarms, co detectors and checking fire extinguishers expiration date. In the event you ever use your fire extinguisher be sure to replace it immediately; partial filled extinguishers are no fun during an urgent time of need. Replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms at least once a year but it is recommended every six months. Many find that working this into the spring & fall cleaning works very well. Once you replace the batteries test the units to ensure they still give a loud clear ringing alarm. The last thing you want to do is sleep through the alarm and be caught in a burning home.

Property managers need a more comprehensive plan than families because they usually have multiple families, businesses and properties to maintain. All facilities should be thoroughly checked every six months and it is a good idea to have the fire department take a look if you have a larger complex. Many insurance companies for property firms require this anyways, so this will help with your due diligence. Also if you have any public buildings such as business parks make sure a new emergency exit map with routes is given to all tenants once a year; even if they already have one in good shape that is exactly the same it is a good reminder. You will be surprised how often the emergency plans get misplaced, buried under paperwork or accidently thrown away.

Here is a short list of items to check every six to twelve months; skip the ones that don't apply but you might think about adding some of the items that are missing to your emergency plan.

  • Smoke detectors & alarms
  • Carbon monoxide detectors & alarms
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Escape Ladders
  • Emergency Exit Signs
  • Emergency Lighting

All of the above items can be found at local hardware stores or online; if you have a large property or multiple properties it is a good idea to plan replacing all of them at once. You can buy in bulk to save quite a bit of money and might even be able to get them at wholesale cost or very close to cost. Always make sure there is a safe way out.

You can get quality smoke alarms and smoke detectors along with co detectors and carbone monoxide alarms at a discount price online from Resculite. Remember stay safe by testing your equipment at least once a year and if you have questions check out the articles on resculite.com or give them a call.

Many boat owners will be meticulous in the maintenance of their boats. They will be aware of the many safety issues around owning and caring for a boat and taking it out to sea. One danger a boat owner or sailor may not be aware of is the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning in the cabin. This can be avoided with an audible carbon monoxide alarm or CO alarm.

The cabin of a boat can often be a small enclosed space, sometimes tightly closed off from the weather. A build up of deadly carbon monoxide gas could occur in certain circumstances, especially if appliances are not working properly or exhaust fumes are entering the cabin.

Any appliance of engine that burns fuels could be a source of risk if they are not working or ventilating properly, including:

  • The boats engine
  • Cookers and heaters
  • Generators

You should ensure that these items are serviced annually as a matter of routine.

Ventilation to the appliances and engine of the boat should never be covered up, even in the worst of weather and any chimney or exhaust pipe should be kept clear of blockages.

Carbon monoxide is odourless, invisible and deadly. Severe CO poisoning will kill quickly. Less severe poisoning can be permanently harmful and may cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, sleeplessness and confusion.

Its presence in quantities sufficient to injure or kill can only be detected with a Carbon Monoxide Alarm or CO Detector. Portable audible alarms can be easily purchased and are effective in safe-guarding boat owners and sailors from this particular hazard. No boat with a cabin should be without one.

Remember, this is a risk that is easily and inexpensively avoided.

If in doubt you should take expert advice or seek emergency help.

Awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning can help save lives. A Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an essential for every home, in addition to annual servicing of boilers and other appliances. An audible Carbon Monoxide Alarm is the key to saving lives

Many burglar alarm security system are sold today in the market. A burglar alarm system is a device that is used and installed in houses, buildings and other structures to protect family members, valuables, properties and confidential items from being stolen.

Your burglar alarm security systems may be in different forms. It can also be in different configuration and schematic diagrams. Some burglar alarm security systems are bulky and some are portable enough to fit into different locations. A burglar alarm system contains a sensor, a siren and the control panel. Some burglar alarm systems are wireless and some are hard-wired.

The Anatomy of the System

The sensor contains detectors that sends signal to the siren whenever it is triggered. These detectors maybe in different forms, like detecting vibration and motion. The siren then receives the signal and sends alarms to the owner by making a loud sound. There are also some systems which remain silent in the vicinity of the home itself but sends a signal directly to the authorities when triggered by intruders.

The noise that is created by the siren may differ from one product to another. But the most important part of a burglar alarm security system is its control panel. It can be compared as a central processing unit in a computer. The control panel contains the necessary operating buttons and is considered as the brain of the burglar alarm security system. The control panel contains the on and off button which can be operated by simply pressing a switch or by pressing a combination of letters and numbers known as codes. It also contains power back ups in case there is a power failure.

It is no surprise that home security systems save lives, they protect families from break-ins, and they monitor the dwelling for smoke and fire, alerting the family to any of these dangers. When an emergency occurs in a house with a home security system an alarm will go off to alert the family and at the same time this alarm system will also signal the monitoring center. The monitoring center will then contact the authorities to alert them to the problem and the address of the residence.

That means police, the fire department or the ambulance will arrive sooner than if the family had called them and that can mean saving lives. It also means when the family is sleeping and might not be aware there is smoke or fire in the house the home security system will sound an alarm that will awake them giving them time to safely get out of the house.

There are also the alarms that go off when a family is not in the house, when only the family pets are there, who are not able to open doors and who will be trapped if not rescued. Having a monitored home security system means when the home security alarm goes off the authorities will still be alerted and in the case of smoke or fire can rescue the family pet, saving their lives.

Another thing that a home security system can monitor and sound an alarm for is carbon monoxide, this is a colorless and odorless poison that can silently kill during the day or at night while the family is sleeping. When this is detected by the security system, it will alert the family and the monitoring center, and this can save lives of family's that might otherwise not have known this deadly poison was in their house.

One feature that might not be used by every family of a home security system is medical monitoring; this is a feature that can save lives when there is a family member in the dwelling has a medical condition or a disability. This family member is able to alert the home security system if they have a medical problem that requires an ambulance.

These are situations where the security system can save lives while at the same time protecting the residence and family from burglars who more and more often today break into dwellings while the family is at home. This can be a dangerous situation and one where the family would not be able to summon help from the authorities.

Having a home security system installed in a residence can save the lives of family's, during fire, smoke, break-ins, carbon monoxide and medical emergencies and it can also help to save the lives of the family pets when they are in the domicile alone. It also takes the stress out of having to be at work when the children come home from school, older children who are in the house before adults might not know what to do when faced with danger in the house. With a home security system what they would do is taken care of by the security system and train operators at the monitoring center.

Home security alarm systems are designed to deter or impede burglars from breaking in and committing a theft. As a means to protect a property, the alarm system is often seen as the most utilized security device. In general sensors are installed at various key locations throughout the house to sound an alert if a door or window is opened while the system is active.

There are two main types of alarm for the home; hard-wired, and wireless. The hard-wired system is connected via a central control box that has wires installed throughout the property. And the wireless systems are battery-powered and able to connect wirelessly to a control panel.

The most common devices give off a sound alert to warn off would-be thieves or vandals. These alarms often deter the burglar and alert the property owner to the intrusion. These self install alert systems can be purchased and installed for as little as $99. In addition, there are the systems that are pre-programmed to call a cell phone number in the event that an alarm is activated.

Than there's the more sophisticated surveillance devices that are professionally installed, monitored via one of the security companies, and subject to a monthly contract fee. These alarms often cost upwards of $500. The high end systems are often more feature packed and able to detect smoke, carbon monoxide and can feature motion sensors.

Whether its a simple network to a complex and highly advanced system these home security alarm systems are able to offer that peace of mind in knowing that the home and personal property is protected while out at work or away on a vacation.

Let me start from the beginning: As a home owner you should be proactive instead of reactive. Thieves will not wait until your home is protected they will strike now while the picking is ripe. To many home owners wait to contact a security company until they become victims of a robbery, while in fact it is proven in statistics that homes with visible security are 14 times less likely to become victims of burglary.

To secure your home you should step back and think like a thief, take a walk around your home and look at the obvious entry points. Are there ladders just laying about that can easily reach that second floor balcony with that open French door? Are there windows left open for ventilation that can easily be accessed by a thief from the level of a nearby fence? These and many more areas are the most inviting to thieves, as they give them easy access to your home without much effort on their part. Take the time to lock down your ladders and always ensure that all doors and windows are properly secured before leaving your home unattended.

All exterior doors should be solid doors with deadbolts and door enforcers. Install peep holes for viewing before opening. Windows and sliding glass doors that can be lifted out from the outside can be secured by installing pan head screws in the upper track, adjust to allow free back and forth movement but with minimum up and down movement. Also secure with commercially available locks or use a broomstick or wooden dowel in the lower track. I personally liked broken hockey sticks, the shafts fit just perfect into sliding door tracks. Garage doors should be closed and locked whenever you are not around.

Install timers on all exterior lights that automatically turn on at dusk and turn off at dawn, thieves do not like to be seen. Keep shrubs and bushes trimmed as to not allow for hiding places. Outdoor sheds should also be locked with secure heavy duty locks.

Residential Security Systems: As every home is different with its own strengths and weaknesses, consult a security expert to visit your home and provide you a quality system designed to fit your security requirements and your budget. For less than a $1.00 a day you can protect your home with a security system, keep that in perspective when you think you can not afford one when you purchase your morning coffee.

A security system will not guarantee to keep the bad guys out but it will keep the time they are in your home to a minimum. Be sure that the security system you purchase is monitored. Alarm monitoring means that someone is always watching your home via the security system along with the alarm monitoring center. Once the system has been breached the monitoring center is notified and the appropriate authorities are dispatched to your home. The loud obnoxious siren will scare off the thief as well.

Security Systems are unique to each premise; hard wired, wireless or a combination of both, they can include fire protection, flood/water, heat and carbon monoxide, perimeter (doors and windows) and interior protection. Again have a security expert visit your home for your requirements. For more information on security for your home and a host of useful tips on safety visit http://www.thesecuritylady.com

A carbon monoxide alarm is essential to prevent accidental exposure to the deadly gas as it cannot be seen, smelt or tasted.
Almost all domestic fuel burning appliances are capable of producing CO, especially if they are badly maintained. This means that every household is at risk of CO poisoning at some point. Carbon Monoxide Alarms are inexpensive and easy to install.

Even if there is a very small amount of Carbon Monoxide Gas escaping into your home you could be at risk of illness including the possibility of long term damage to the brain.

Common symptoms for Carbon Monoxide poisoning are similar to symptoms of an ordinary cold or to a dose of flu (without fever) and include:

Headaches
Dizziness
Fatigue
Weakness
Sleeplessness
Confusion

If you and especially other members of your family are suffering from these symptoms, you cannot be sure that you are not suffering from the effects of Carbon Monoxide poisoning unless you have installed a CO Alarm in your house.

Unborn babies, small children, pregnant women and senior citizens - especially with respiratory problems - may experience the symptoms sooner than others. But everyone in a house is at risk.

Even tiny amounts of carbon monoxide can cause harm; and long term exposure to small amounts of CO (assuming they are not fatal) can even cause permanent brain damage.

The presence of Carbon Monoxide is measured in parts per million. The following table gives an indication of the harm different amounts of the gas can cause:

50 PPM -The maximum safety level as defined by the Health and Safety Executive
200 PPM -Slight headache, tiredness, dizziness and nausea after 2-3 hours
400PPM -Frontal headache within 1-2 hours, life threatening after 3 hours
800 PPM -Dizziness, nausea and convulsions within 45 minutes. Unconsciousness within 2 hours. Death within 2-3 hours
1600 PPM -Headache, dizziness and nausea with 20 minutes. Death within 1 hour
6400 PPM -Headache, dizziness and nausea within 1-2 minutes. Death within 10-15 minutes

A Carbon Monoxide Alarm should give a shrill alarm within the following timetables (according to European Standard EN50291:2001), so protecting you from illness or death, even if you are asleep:

50 PPM -The unit must alarm within 60 - 90 minutes
100 PPM -The unit must alarm with 10 - 40 minutes
300 PPM -The unit must alarm in less than 3 minutes

Carbon Monoxide harms by entering the lungs as you breathe normally and displacing oxygen from the bloodstream. This interrupts the normal supply of oxygen to the vital organs and puts your life at risk.

The very best way to prevent accidental death from CO poisoning is to buy an audible CO Alarm and to ensure that your appliances are serviced annually.

Awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning can help save lives. A Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an essential for every home, in addition to annual servicing of boilers and other appliances. An audible Carbon Monoxide Alarm is the key to saving lives.

You have installed a home security system in your home and you sleep peacefully knowing your home is safe from thieves and burglars. But is your family and home protected from fire or carbon monoxide poisoning? Will your smoke detector alert be enough to alert your family in case of fire?

Installing a security system that includes fire protection can save your family's life. Mike Edwards is a success story for ADT, the nation's leading security systems. According to information posted on the company's website, Edwards fell asleep while preparing dinner. The heat sensor was activated, alerting the fire department. An ADT representative called Mike's wife at work.

Since the door was dead bolted, firefighters had to break down the door. They found Mike on the floor, with no pulse. Thankfully, Mike was revived and brought back to life. Ironically, Mike has installed his system just four months before the fire.

Everyone wants to think that a devastating fire can never happen to them. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, 1,602,000 homes in the United States caught fire in 2005. What can an alarm system do for you?

Alert your family with a loud noise when smoke is detected in your home while you are sleeping.

If you are away, the alarm will summon help to your home immediately.

Some alarms can alert you on your cell phone if your home catches fire.

Many alarm systems have an option for carbon monoxide detection. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you in minutes. Every year, 200 people are killed in the United States by carbon monoxide poisoning. An alarm system can alert you when there is a deadly amount of the gas in your home. This can save you and your family's lives.

Another add-on to a standard security system is a flood detector. If you have ever waded through your basement, this is something you will want to consider adding on to the standard installation.

If you have ill or elderly people in your home, you will want to consider adding a medical alert system. With the touch of a button, 911 will be called in case of an emergency. The monitoring device can be worn as a pendant or on the wrist.

With the exception of treasured family heirlooms, possessions can be replaced. People are not replaceable. Adding fire, carbon monoxide and flood protection to your security system ensures the safety of your family.

Bruce Kelly is an ADT advisor with Security Choice, an ADT Home Security authorized company, the Nation's leading provider of Home Alarm Systems.

FIVE STEPS TO SAFETY

1. Buy and fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm today. An audible alarm can be bought widely at DIY and hardware stores. This is the most important thing that you can do to protect your family from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. We do not recommend the use of "Black Spot" carbon monoxide patches. Although they can detect CO, they will not protect you if you are poisoned while you are sleeping.

2. Ensure all your appliances are serviced at least once a year. All fuel burning appliances should be serviced annually by an engineer qualified and registered by the appropriate organisation like CORGI for gas, HETAS for solid fuel or OFTEC for oil. If you are a tenant in rented accommodation with gas appliances your landlord must provide you with proof that a CORGI registered engineer has checked the appliance within the last 12 months. You should ask you landlord to fit a Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

3. Don't block ventilation to your appliances. Make sure that there is plenty of ventilation to rooms which contain appliances or which contain open fires or solid fuel burners. Ensure that vents and flues are not blocked.

4. Make sure your chimneys are swept and kept clear of debris. Make sure that chimneys are swept at least once a year by a qualified Chimney Sweep. A Chimney Sweep can also check your chimney does not leak with a smoke test. Chimneys can become blocked, for example with birds' nests if they are not used in the summer.

5. If in doubt call for expert advice or emergency help. In an emergency, or if your CO Alarm goes off, open doors and windows for ventilation and ensure everyone leaves the house. Call the relevant 24 hour advice line in the UK or call the emergency services on 999 (in the UK) for help. You should seek medical advice and ensure all appliances are serviced and checked. Do not use them again until you are told it is safe.

Do not become a victim of the silent killer

Your foremost concern is keeping your family safe. Probably the most fundamental way to see to their safety is to own some sort of residential fire alarm system. Systems can range from a single smoke detector to an elaborate system monitored by a company. If you're not sure of what is the best system for your family, then you should look into the different types of home fire alarms. Then you will be able to make an informed decision about the kind that will provide the most protection and work in your budget.

Every Home Must Have a Smoke Detector

At the very minimum, your home fire alarm system should include one or more smoke detectors, depending on the size of the house. Smoke detectors are a small alarm that's mounted on the ceiling. When the machine detects smoke, the alarm goes off. Many small apartments have only one, but the safest way is to have one to each room.

Smoke detector options include an interconnected system of smoke alarms, in which if one goes off, all the others do as well, and smoke detectors with built in carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, deadly gas that can be produced by an improperly working furnace.

Although it seems like a good idea to have a smoke alarm in the kitchen, because that is where the majority of home fires start, in reality it is not recommended. This is because smoke can be a usual product of food preparation, burned toast for example, and it is inconvenient to have to respond to these false alarms. The smoke detector placed in the next room will sound if there is a real fire in the kitchen.

Many home smoke detectors use battery power. With battery powered smoke alarms a general rule of thumb is change the battery once a year without fail. One way to remember is to do it on the day we turn the clocks back in fall. Other smoke detectors are "hardwired," that is connected to the electricity in the house; however, electric smoke alarms do not work when the power is out, just when your family may need them. Another popular option is an electrical smoke alarm with battery back-up, in which case you must still change the battery every year.

Automatic Sprinklers

Many cities and states have laws requiring automatic fire sprinklers in new residential buildings, usually in high density communities. If you are building or remodeling your home, take automatic fire sprinklers into consideration. The cost can certainly be steep, but the savings can be enormous, the lives of your family members and your home and precious keepsakes.

Automatic sprinklers are plumbed into the water system of the house, and will release a forceful spray of water when the temperature at the ceiling reaches a certain level. They can be recessed into the ceiling using white, black or neutral fittings, and will pop out in use.

Fire Extinguishers

It is a good idea for every home to have one or more fire extinguishers within easy reach. That way, when the fire alarm does go off, quick action may prevent a small, contained fire from becoming a large destructive one. The best kind of fire extinguisher for home use is one that is relatively small (for easier use) and contains a fire extinguishing chemical that can be used on the largest variety of fire types (grease, wood, textiles, etc.). Make sure the instructions are clear and easy to read, and have your extinguisher checked by a certified agency once a year.

Monitored Fire Alarm Systems

The very top of the line is a monitored residential fire alarm system. This is usually installed along with a burglar alarm system. These systems will include remote monitoring from a company that will contact fire and medical authorities in the event of an emergency. A monitored fire alarm system will contain a central control panel that hooks up to several smoke alarms and heat detectors. Heat detectors are usually more reliable than smoke detectors alone, since they contain more sophisticated mechanics. These all inclusive systems have the additional advantage of being run off the house power with battery backup in the event of a power outage.

The disadvantage to this system is the cost of installation, and the monitoring service does require a small monthly fee. However, if you can make room in the budget for it, the ability to put more sophisticated detectors in some places, such as the kitchen, and the enhanced reliability of outside monitoring are good reasons to purchase such a system.

A Fire Alarm for Deaf People

If you are deaf, or someone in your family is, you know that the world can be a tricky place. There are many situations in which you are not able to hear something like the doorbell or the telephone. One thing that might be over looked, but is very important, is having a fire alarm for the deaf.

The most common kind of fire alarm for the deaf is one that has a very bright flashing strobe that goes off when the fire alarm goes off. When this happens, even if the person is sleeping, the light should wake them up. It needs to be a very bright strobe, and it needs to be located in a place where it will be noticed when it goes off. This can be necessary if you have deaf family members or even friends who visit often.

But whether you go for the less expensive home fire alarm system or for something with extra features, it is vital that you have some sort of residential fire alarm system in the house for the safety of your most precious belongings, your family.

With the initial cost of purchase, the cost of installation, and the monthly maintenance fees, home security systems can be expensive. Even fairly simple house alarm systems may cost a thousand dollars, which may sound like quite a bit. When you are buying such a system, keep in mind that your safety and security are worth more than any amount of money. Keeping your family safe from fire and thieves will be worth whatever the security system costs.

In reality today, you cannot be overly cautious when it comes to the safety and protection of your house and household. Theft, burglary, fire, and carbon monoxide are just a few of the threats that worry many homeowners. House alarm systems can provide peace of mind whether you are in the house or off on holiday. There are a number of products and services available today that can protect you, your household, and your house.

Sadly, many homeowners do not consider purchasing a house alarm system until a disaster has already occurred. Sometimes it takes a break-in, a fire or some other disaster to drive home the need for an alarm system. Further, the cost of installing such a system is often seen as prohibitive. Happily, this is not the case. Many affordable home alarm systems are available, and unbeknownst to many homeowners, installing such a system can enable them to save money on their homeowner's insurance policies.

For those in the market for house alarm systems, a wide range of factors need to be considered. What threats pose the greatest risks for your house? What is your budget? Do you want a simple alarm or a complete array of wireless surveillance cameras? The answers to queries will help narrow your options and determine what type of system is right for you and yours.

In doing your research, you will certainly be presented with a myriad of options. Remember to ask lots of questions when you are dealing with each company. You want to know that the system you choose will be right for you! Make sure that everyone in your household is familiar with the system and how it works. Having a security system will be useless if no one knows how to operate it. Additionally, always remember that no alarm system is a substitute for having a viable emergency plan.

There are numerous companies offering house alarm systems today. It is important to do your homework and decide which one is best for you. Check with several different companies and compare their pros and cons. A little extra effort goes a long way in finding the right protection for you and your family. In addition, spending a little extra time may keep you from spending extra money later on!

Security systems for homes can be a large investment. Some services expect fees for installation as well as monthly monitoring. Even simple home security systems can cost several hundred dollars. Nothing is more important than the safety of you and your loved ones. The truth is there are some options you can afford. What a lot of folks don't know is that you can save a lot of money on your homeowner's insurance by putting in house alarm systems. Are you confused about the different types of home alarm systems and which type is best for you? At one time, home alarm systems were pretty simple and straightforward. Unfortunately, they did not provide very well rounded coverage. Today that problem has been fixed and there are now many different options that will help you protect your home and family from a variety of threats. This may mean; however, that you have a more difficult time in deciding which option is best for you.

A basic door alarm is a good way to begin protecting your home from the garden variety burglar. This type of security system is designed to frighten away prospective burglars by sounding a loud signal. The noise alone is sufficient enough in most cases to frighten away burglars.

If you are interested in a home alarm system that is somewhat more advanced you might wish to consider a one that will also alert local fire departments and police departments. This type of system will detect the presence of floods, fire or carbon monoxide. Sensors are placed at various points throughout the home in order to emit signals when something is detected that could result in disaster. This type of system may also contain the ability to monitor temperature control as well. If you live in an area where your pipes are prone to freezing when the temperature drops, this can be a good solution to consider. Sensor will alert a monitoring system as well as you in the event of low temperatures to prevent your home from becoming damaged to pipes that may freeze and then burst.

Another option now available in high-tech security is the presence of motion detectors. These types of detectors are typically sensitive to light and have the ability to determine whether the intruder is outside the home or inside the home. Security cameras have also become increasingly popular with many high-end home alarm systems.

Major security providers like ADT provide an option for a wireless home alarm. These systems are less invasive and give you added flexibility when retrofitting an old home. Make sure to check with your provider first as some brands like Brinks do not have this amount of flexibility.

Glass break detectors are another common feature of advanced home alarm systems. These detectors assist in detecting when glass within the home is broken. In the event a burglar attempts to break into your home by breaking a window or door, this will be detected and a signal alerted.

Pressure mats can be placed underneath rugs in the home and will provide an alert in the event there is an unwanted presence in the home. This particular feature is helpful in alerting the presence of a burglar when perhaps only an elderly parent or the kids are at home.

Panic buttons connect emergency numbers to the home alarm system. As a result, in the event of an emergency, the appropriate numbers will be immediately contacted such as the hospital, police or fire department.

Cameras can be placed at strategic locations around your property, providing you with the ability to view your property both from inside your home as well as from work or even while you are away on vacation if you like. This means that your home is continually protected and will have the visual footage to make sure that prospective burglars will not be able to succeed in their plans to invade your home.

Installing a home alarm system is definitely a step in the right direction to securing your home. Burglars are more likely to bypass your home to reduce their risk of getting caught.

A tip from Bruce Kelly - Home alarm systems give you added protection. Get as much information as you can in order to determine what type of solution and which provider is best for you

Home Security systems are no longer just to protect against home invasions. Of course, they are still great at protecting your home from burglars and invasions; however, in the last few years home security systems have evolved to the point that they are able to protect your home and your family from much more than just burglars. Many of the systems available on the market today can also protect you from carbon monoxide and fire as well. There are even systems that can provide protection in the event of medical emergencies. The latter are particularly beneficial for older individuals who live alone but who also require assistance in the event of an emergency.

Due to the fact that home security systems provide so many advantages and have proven to be quite a deterrent to would-be burglars, many insurance companies are now willing to offer homeowners discounts up to 20% when they have a home security system. In fact, statistics indicate that a home with a security system is three times less likely to be invaded by burglars as a home without a system.

If you want to make sure that you have complete protection; however, you might want to consider one of the many options that are now available on many home security systems.

24-hour monitoring-This option gives you the peace of mind in knowing that trained professionals will monitor your system and then sound an alarm as well as call the fire department, ambulance or police in the event of an emergency. Even if you are not at home or you cannot get to the phone yourself, it will be taken care of for you.

Theft Protection-With basic home alarm systems you can rely on sensors in the windows and doors as well as motion detectors and sounders that can work to frighten away prospective burglars. With a more advanced system; you can receive additional protection in the form of glass break detectors.

Smoke and Fire Detection-Sure, you have smoke detectors; however, even they may not be enough to protect you in the event of a fire. A monitored detector will actually sound an alarm as well as send a signal to the monitoring center who will contact the fire department.

Carbon Monoxide Detection-Estimates indicate that as many as 1,800 people die each year from carbon monoxide; a gas that is colorless and odorless. As a result, many homeowners have made the decision to protect their families from what is frequently referred to as a silent killer. A monitored sensor will detect the presence of this gas and then sound an alarm as well as send a signal to the monitoring signal for help to be contacted.

Flood Detection-Have you ever come home to find that your basement is knee deep in water because of broken pipes or a washing machine that overflowed? Those possibilities will be a thing of the past with flood detection. This option actually triggers sensors when rising water is detection. You as well as the monitoring center will be alerted.

Home security and safety comes in many forms. Determining what options are right for your situation are critical. Monitored systems increase your protection level and solutions can be configured for just about any home.

Bruce Kelly tip - Installing reputable brands like ADT Alarms will aid in installation, monitoring and options available to expand your security and safety coverage

Awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning can help save lives. A Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an essential for every home, in addition to annaul servicing of boilers and other appliances. An audible Carbon Monoxide Alarm is the key to saving lives

Recently, Philadelphia authorities placed an announcement to local residents advising them of a scam operation in the area that used the promise of "free home security" to lure individuals into working with a pseudo company. Worse yet, residents had been told by "representatives" that the company was working with other locally known security companies on a cross promotional deal. Residents were told to call police if they were approached with such a business deal.

What could these dishonest individuals have to gain from starting their own pseudo company? Any number of openings, from stealing owners' credit card or banking information, stealing personal information for identity theft, or even targeting the home for robbery or the homeowner for assault. Ironically, criminals are even willing to use increased security technology for their own dishonest purposes. This news case should point out to consumers a few important facts.

First, there is no such thing as free home security monitoring, nor would the top security companies get together on a cross promotional activity, since they are direct competitors. You may see the reputable security companies offering free home security systems, but these usually include a contract and a monthly monitoring fee.

In order for a company to provide live monitoring, they must charge a monthly fee, since they will either be connecting your service to the company's central system through a landline phone or through cellular technology. The only free communications system? CB radio! However, it's unlikely anyone will take your cries for help seriously on an open airwave. Additionally, the cost of motion detector sensors, as well as special sensors that pick up on fire risks, high carbon monoxide levels, and even air conditioning problems, are very expensive.

Most of these expenses are deferred or eliminated completely, as you merely pay a small setup fee and then continue paying off these expenses with your premium rate. When you use a company with live monitoring services, you may get several interconnected command centers that are strategically located throughout the United States. You also get free equipment in many cases.

Beware of any company that offers you a free home security system AND free monitoring services. The only companies that you should work with are companies that offer (A) 24-7 home monitoring, (B) professional installation by a licensed and certified technician and (C) that have a proven name and company history.

Many people purchase home security systems solely to protect against burglary. However, sophisticated home monitoring systems can protect against a wide range of risks including: carbon monoxide poisoning, flooding, and freezing temperatures.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas created during the combustion of many fuels.Improperly vented gas stoves, water heaters, or other appliances can leak this dangerous gas into your home. Your family could be sound asleep and have no idea they are inhaling potentially vapors.Carbon monoxide sensors will trigger an alarm if they sense an accumulation of the gas. Adding a carbon monoxide detector to a home monitoring system costs around $125/sensor.

Home security companies can also install and monitor flood detectors. This system detects water flow. If water has flowed through the water line longer than it should have, the alarm will go off. This is a feature to consider if your home has poor plumbing or is on land that is susceptible to flooding.Flood detectors range in price. Some alarm systems will add it on for an extra dollar a month. Others cost between $60-$110 each.

An added protection for you and your home are temperature sensors. Temperature sensors alert the owner when the temperatures are too low or too high. They observe low temperatures to warn when it may be getting to cold, to warn that pipes may freeze. The home security systems that offer temperature sensors offer them for $125 each.

Two way voice communications are another protection offered by home monitoring companies. Although it seem like it is more for convenience, they can also help protect you and your home. These systems function as intercoms within your home. If one person is upstairs and another is downstairs and someone should get injured, have an emergency or witness a fire, the two way voice communications can assist in getting that person attention quickly and efficiently. Two way communications are available with most home security systems.

Home security systems can save not only you and your family, but also your home. And not just from burglary, but also from flood, frozen pipes, carbon monoxide, and other emergencies. Consider all these features when choosing your next security system.

This is a very important topic for homeowners because of all the possible problems in a home. We have inspected hundreds of homes with attached garages. Attached garages are convenient and nice but also can be the cause of "Carbon Monoxide Poisoning." This is an important topic because of all the homes inspected, only 1 had a Carbon Monoxide Alarm in the house. That tells all of us that most individuals are not aware of the problem.

Just recently, we were inspecting a home for mold contamination in Lake Worth, Fl. It was the typical 3 Bedroom, 2 Bath Home with an attached garage. During the Mold Inspection, we noticed the smell of gasoline in the hallway next to the attached garage. We immediately informed the homeowner who took us to the garage. In the garage, we noticed they were storing gasoline in the garage, the amount was five, five gallon containers of gas. All were full, but apparently leaking fumes. The homeowner removed the gasoline to an outside storage area for proper venting.

The moral of this story is, if gasoline fumes can enter the house thru the garage entrance door seals, then Carbon Monoxide fumes can also enter the home. You can smell the gasoline, but you cannot smell Carbon Monoxide fumes. You cannot see or smell Carbon Monoxide. It can kill an individual in a short period of time at high levels.

Carbon Monoxide is made whenever any source such as gasoline, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned. These products are not hazardous to us unless they are vented into a confined space such as your home. An idling car in the garage is a perfect example. An improperly vented gas powered hot water heater is another example. We have seen many gas powered hot water heaters improperly vented to the outside. If you have one, have a properly trained professional check to make sure it is properly vented.

Every year, hundreds of people die accidentally from CO or Carbon Monoxide Poisoning due to malfunctioning or improperly installed appliances. There are also many more who die from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning produced by idling cars in the garage. This is why, all homes should be equipped with a Carbon Monoxide Monitor to prevent this type of problem.

Tips To Stay Alive:

1. Do not idle your car in the Garage, After you start and back-out of your Garage, leave the Garage Door open to allow the Carbon Monoxide from your cars exhaust to dissipate. Do not run a generator in your garage either.

2. Do not use a gas grill, charcoal grill, butane burning stove or any other type of flame burning appliance in your house.

3. Do not use a gas oven or stove in your home unless it is properly vented to the outside. Check your oven right now if you have one. If you do, have a properly trained professional inspect the system. Do not trust your life to anyone who says it is OK to burn a stove or an oven indoors without an exterior exhaust system that comes on when you start the stove or oven to use.

4. Use common sense, if it has a flame, it has to be exhausted to the outside of your home. Install a Carbon Monoxide Monitor in your home.

5. Fireplaces must always be vented to the outside. It is important that the flue be checked to make sure it is drafting properly.

It is important that you have your indoor gas appliances checked once a year to make sure they are functioning properly in a safe manner so as not to cause Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in your home. If you have an Attached Garage, be extra cautious with an idling car in the garage. Always air the garage out after entering and leaving the garage with a car or truck. Read and follow the manufacturers' instructions that came with your gas or fuel powered appliances. In an emergency situation, call 911 and seek medical help immediately if you suspect Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in your home.

The interesting thing about this article is, the inspection started out as a Mold Inspection and ended up as gasoline intrusion. By the way, they also had Mold in their home. We had to have a Mold Remediation Company come in and do a Mold Remediation Project in their home. If you have any questions, feel free to call us or visit our website. We would also recommend you go to the EPA's Website and read their article on Carbon Monoxide as an addendum to this article.

Remember, Carbon Monoxide Can Kill You Silently.
